The Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation invites the public to a free program on wild turkeys on Friday, Nov. 6, 2026, at the Galena Territory Association social hall, 2000 Territory Drive, Galena. The evening begins with a social hour at 6 p.m., followed by the presentation at 7 p.m. Complimentary popcorn and Potosi Beer, courtesy of The Potosi Foundation, will be served, and attendees may bring their own beverages. Wildlife biologist Doug Dufford will share insights from his research and later field work on wild turkeys, including how thinking changed since the 1980s, when it was once believed wild turkeys would not survive in less than 20,000 contiguous acres of forest. Southern Illinois University graduate student Chris Wemmer, part of a team researching wild turkey habitat at JDCF's preserve and science center, will also present. Jo Daviess is the leading Illinois county for turkey harvesting, that is, legal hunting, according to the foundation. The event is sponsored by Apple River State Bank and First Community Bank of Galena.
