The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is preparing for a bustling Memorial Day weekend, marking the official commencement of the summer outdoor recreation season across the state parks and forests.
“Visitors to the parks are eager to step outdoors and relish the lovely weather,” stated Sherry Arntzen, the head of the DNR’s State Parks, Forests, and Preserves Bureau. “Our parks provide a wide array of activities suitable for every enthusiast, from hiking and picnicking to fishing and swimming. There is something available for everyone to enjoy while experiencing the great outdoors.”
Campers planning to visit Iowa state parks and forests during Memorial Day weekend are encouraged to make advance plans. Many of the electrical and full hookup sites in popular parks have already been booked, so it’s advisable for campers to look into non-electric sites or consider lesser-known parks that may be a bit farther from home. To obtain the latest information on park and trail closures due to renovations or weather-related issues, please refer to the DNR’s Alerts and Notifications webpage.
Visitors to the parks are reminded to assist in keeping the areas clean by picking up after themselves and carrying out all trash. Vehicles should be parked in designated lots, not along roadways. When visiting beaches, please note that most swimming areas do not have lifeguards, and pets are prohibited from beaches and must remain on a leash.
“We hope campers will create lasting memories while enjoying their stay in our parks and recreational areas, and do so safely, returning for future visits,” Arntzen expressed.
