Dubuque, IA – During a special session convened this evening, the Dubuque City Council voted unanimously in favor of reinstating gender equality protections within its human rights ordinance. The vote, which passed 7-0, aims to enhance the rights of both residents and visitors, fostering a culture of fairness and inclusivity across the city.
Council members expressed regret for their earlier oversight, acknowledging the lack of communication and public discourse that led to the removal of gender identity protections at a prior meeting. Previously, in a 7-0 vote, the Council had approved the ordinance without including specific protections for gender identity.
Furthermore, discussions took place regarding the importance of consulting with commission recommendations in shaping future city ordinances.
The revised ordinance explicitly forbids discrimination based on gender identity and expression in key areas such as employment, housing, and public accommodations. This legislative adjustment positions Dubuque in alignment with both state and federal laws, reaffirming the city’s dedication to promoting equality.
