Investigation Launched into Officer-Involved Shooting After Multi-Agency Chase in Illinois

Savanna, IL – A high-speed chase that originated in Freeport late Wednesday night concluded in Savanna early Thursday morning, resulting in multiple injuries to law enforcement officers and the apprehension of a suspect.

At approximately 10:19 p.m. on June 25, officers from the Freeport Police Department responded to a report regarding a potentially stolen vehicle. Upon locating the vehicle and attempting a traffic stop, the driver fled, narrowly missing collision with a police car as well as another vehicle. The pursuit was ultimately discontinued as officers lost sight of the vehicle.

Later that night, a deputy from the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office spotted the vehicle near Hanover. A brief pursuit ensued, but it was also called off.

The suspect was eventually located near Savanna around 3:40 a.m. on June 26. During the subsequent chase, the suspect’s vehicle collided with a squad car, rendering it inoperable. At approximately 3:45 a.m., the first report of gunfire was registered. The pursuit continued with participation from officers of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Savanna Police Department, and Mount Carroll Police Department. A second report of gunfire followed around 3:48 a.m.

Shortly thereafter, the suspect’s vehicle crashed at the intersection of Chicago Street and Park Street in Savanna, colliding with a Mount Carroll Police Department squad car. At approximately 3:49 a.m., officers made contact with the suspect. Shortly after, additional shots were fired, prompting an emergency medical response.

Several officers from the Savanna Police Department, Mount Carroll Police Department, and Carroll County Sheriff’s Office sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals but are reported to have non-life-threatening conditions. The suspect also sustained injuries and was airlifted to a regional hospital, where their condition is currently stable.

In accordance with established protocol, the Illinois State Police have commenced an investigation into the incident, which remains active. Further details are not available at this time.
