On June 15, 2025, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office received a report concerning a significant number of cattle obstructing Highway 61 near Tobins 80 Lane in Potosi Township.
While law enforcement deputies were on their way to the scene, they were alerted that a vehicle had collided with some of the cattle.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered that the livestock belonged to Gerald Kerkenbush, a resident of Potosi. They also learned that Marissa Robey, an 18-year-old from Dubuque, was traveling southbound on Highway 61 in a 2007 Honda Accent when she struck multiple cows.
During the investigation, it came to light that Jess Johnson, 53, of Viroqua, was heading northbound on Highway 61 in a 2020 Dodge Ram. Witnesses reported that Johnson had recklessly passed several vehicles, which had their hazard lights activated, while flashing his high beams—a contributing factor in the resulting traffic incident.
Kerkenbush received a citation for livestock at large, while Johnson was cited for failure to dim headlights, unreasonable speed, and unsafe passing.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office received assistance from the Potosi Fire Department and Donnie’s Tire and Auto, located in Dickeyville.
