East Dubuque, Illinois (July 16, 2025, 2:57 PM CDT) – The residents of East Dubuque, Illinois, continue to abide by a boil order as the city anticipates the results of two crucial water tests set for Tuesday and Wednesday, July 22 and 23, 2025. This precautionary measure was implemented after a significant drop in water pressure occurred during a valve installation operation. Officials express optimism that favorable test results could lead to lifting the boil order by Wednesday.
The issue arose on Thursday, June 23, 2025, when crews commenced the installation of a relief valve on St. Mary’s Drive as part of East Dubuque’s water tower project. The valve plays a vital role in regulating system pressure once the new tower becomes operational. On Friday, June 24, a malfunctioning valve was identified, which hindered the complete isolation of water flow to the construction area. In response, additional valves were shut, successfully stopping the flow, but this action unexpectedly caused a pressure drop throughout the majority of the city’s water system.
City officials state that low water pressure could allow bacteria to infiltrate the system, presenting a health risk to residents. “As a municipal water system, we have a legal and ethical duty to safeguard public health,” noted a representative from the East Dubuque water department. “Following guidelines from the Illinois EPA, we promptly issued the boil order to ensure the safety of our community.”
Water testing commenced on Monday, July 14, with results expected by Tuesday, July 15. If the initial test returns clear, a follow-up test will be conducted on Tuesday, with results anticipated on Wednesday, July 16. Should both tests confirm that no contaminants are present, the boil order will be rescinded.
In light of the incident, city officials commended the swift response of their team. “Our crew executed all necessary actions promptly given the unforeseen challenge,” the spokesperson stated. “The malfunctioning valve was unexpected, and our team acted quickly to rectify the situation, although it resulted in pressure issues.”
To avoid future occurrences, East Dubuque intends to schedule similar projects earlier in the week, thereby allowing ample time for resolution prior to weekends when laboratory resources may be scarce. The city is also focused on enhancing communication between departments to ensure that timely and accurate information reaches the public. Furthermore, officials will strive to provide clearer updates to the media to keep the community properly informed.
In the interim, residents are advised to boil water for a minimum of one minute before utilizing it for drinking, cooking, or dental hygiene. Bottled water remains a safe alternative. “We recognize that this is an inconvenience, and we appreciate our community’s patience,” the spokesperson concluded. “Our priority is ensuring safe drinking water for all.”
