Guttenberg, IA – Officials from the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office have confirmed that the body retrieved from the Mississippi River on July 12th, 2025, is identified as 41-year-old Neven Soknic, who had been reported missing just days prior, on July 9th, 2025. The fisherfolk in the area discovered Soknic’s remains north of the Cassville ferry landing.

Authorities indicated that Soknic was last seen alive on July 7th, 2025, in the vicinity of the Turkey River Mound State Preserve, located on Estes Point Road in rural Guttenberg, IA. A thorough search was initiated after his vehicle was located abandoned near the preserve on July 9th.
The cause and manner of death are still under investigation, with law enforcement awaiting toxicology results from an autopsy conducted by the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office. Currently, foul play is not suspected in this case.
The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, alongside the Waterloo Police Department, expresses gratitude to the public for their efforts in aiding the search for Soknic and thanks everyone who contributed tips and support throughout the investigation.
