Dubuque County Officer-Involved Shooting Results in One Fatality and Injury to Sergeant

DUBUQUE COUNTY, Iowa — A tragic traffic stop involving multiple law enforcement agencies along Highway 151 near Cascade ended in fatality during the early hours of July 1, 2025, resulting in the death of one individual and injuries to a sergeant from the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO), officials reported.

At around 4:30 a.m., officers from the DCSO, Dubuque Police Department, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Monticello Police Department, and Jones County Sheriff’s Office engaged in a traffic enforcement operation on Highway 151, just north of the Highway 136 interchange. This operation was part of an ongoing multi-agency investigation, as indicated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), which was subsequently called to the scene.

During the traffic stop, the suspect, identified as 36-year-old James Sherrill of Linn County, Iowa, reportedly brandished a handgun. Gunfire ensued, resulting in injuries to both Sherrill and DCSO Sergeant Adam Williams. Sherrill, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sergeant Williams, 46, an 18-year veteran of the DCSO, was rushed to MercyOne Emergency Care in Dubuque and later transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment of a gunshot wound. He has since been released from medical care.

Involved in the incident were Officer Chad Leitzen, 49, a 23-year veteran of the Dubuque Police Department, and Officer Cole Millard, 42, who has served for 2 years with the Monticello Police Department.

The DCI is presently investigating the incident, with findings slated for review by the Dubuque County Attorney’s Office and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office upon completion. Authorities have stated that additional information will not be disclosed at this time.
