Dubuque County Sheriff’s Deputy Wounded During High-Stakes Traffic Stop

**Dubuque, IA – July 1, 2025.** Early Tuesday morning, a high-risk traffic stop on Highway 151 resulted in a tragic turn of events, with one deputy from the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) injured and the suspect deceased. The incident unfolded around 4:25 a.m. when multiple law enforcement agencies—including the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office, Dubuque Police Department, Iowa State Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Monticello Police Department, and Jones County Sheriff’s Office—intervened during a multi-jurisdictional investigation involving a suspicious vehicle.

During the stop, the male suspect, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, brandished a handgun and opened fire. As a result, a DCSO deputy was hit by gunfire and subsequently transported to MercyOne Emergency Department in Dubuque before being moved to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The current condition of the deputy is serious but stable.

The suspect was also struck by gunfire and was pronounced dead shortly after being taken from the scene. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has assumed control of the investigation, and all media inquiries should be directed to DCI Assistant Director Don Schnitker at (515) 238-0465.

Authorities have stated that there is no ongoing threat to the community due to this incident.
