Iowa Initiates Enhanced Traffic Safety Campaign for Fourth of July Weekend
DES MOINES, Iowa – June 23, 2025 – As residents of Iowa prepare for festive Fourth of July activities, including fireworks displays, barbecues, and swimming pool gatherings, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is emphasizing the importance of road safety. In light of last year’s tragic Fourth of July weekend, which recorded nine traffic fatalities—the most deadly Fourth of July in over ten years—the GTSB is collaborating with local law enforcement for a high-visibility enforcement initiative scheduled from July 3 to July 7, 2025.
The objective of this campaign is to combat impaired driving and significantly reduce the recent surge in traffic fatalities during the holiday period. “We want everyone to have fun and celebrate responsibly,” stated GTSB Bureau Chief Brett Tjepkes. “Impaired driving poses a threat to all road users, and our law enforcement partners are equipped to identify impaired drivers and will take action to ensure safety. Plan for a sober ride if you intend to drink.”
To promote safe travel, the GTSB encourages Iowans to select a designated sober driver, arrange for a taxi or rideshare service, or utilize existing local sober ride programs. Additionally, Doll Distributing’s Decide to Ride initiative will be offering a $10 Uber voucher to incentivize safe transport options. This voucher, which is valid statewide from 5:00 PM on July 3 to 2:00 AM on July 7, can be accessed at [insert link placeholder, as no specific link was provided]. The GTSB is backing this effort by raising awareness to ensure safer roads in Iowa.
Authorities stress that planning ahead is critical to preventing preventable tragedies. Whether attending a barbecue or enjoying fireworks, Iowans are advised to make responsible choices and avoid impaired driving.
For further information about the Decide to Ride initiative or to obtain the Uber voucher, please visit the GTSB website or contact your local law enforcement agency. Let’s work together to make this Fourth of July a safe and enjoyable occasion for everyone.
