Dubuque Establishes Cooling Centers in Response to Intense Heat Wave

DUBUQUE, Iowa — As temperatures are forecasted to soar into the 90s and heat index readings may reach or exceed 100 from Saturday, June 21, through Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the City of Dubuque has established multiple public cooling centers to help residents cope with the excessive heat.

Cooling Center Locations and Operational Hours:

• Bunker Hill Golf Course Clubhouse, 2200 Bunker Hill Rd.: Daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

• Carnegie-Stout Public Library, 360 W. 11th St.: Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.; Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

• Dubuque Intermodal Transportation Center Lobby, 950 Elm St.: Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Monday and Tuesday from 6:45 a.m. to 6:15 p.m.

• Dubuque Rescue Mission, 398 Main St.: Daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

• Dubuque Salvation Army, 1099 Iowa St.: Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• Kennedy Mall (public areas), 555 John F. Kennedy Rd.: Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

• ImOn Ice Arena, 1800 Admiral Sheehy Dr.: Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Monday and Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

• Multicultural Family Center, 1157 Central Ave.: Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

• Petco, 2541 Northwest Arterial: Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

• PetSmart, 1300 John F. Kennedy Rd.: Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

City officials advise residents to take appropriate precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses, especially for at-risk groups such as the elderly, children, individuals with obesity, those suffering from chronic health issues, and outdoor workers. Suggested Safety Tips include:

• Utilize a buddy system to check on others.

• Never leave individuals or pets in closed vehicles.

• Maintain hydration with water or electrolyte drinks; aim for pale yellow urine.

• Incorporate potassium-rich foods like bananas or sports drinks to replenish salts.

• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, apply sunscreen, and wear hats.

• Stay in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

• Progress slowly in hot weather and take breaks if you feel dizzy, nauseous, or weak.
