Dubuque, Iowa – On June 12th, an air quality alert has been issued due to heightened levels of PM2.5, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) measuring 117, which is categorized as “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.” This level of air pollution could pose health risks for those with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, as well as elderly individuals, children, and anyone with sensitivities to poor air quality. The general population is not expected to experience significant effects.
The chief pollutant, PM2.5 (particulate matter less than 2.5 microns), is currently recorded at 37.5 µg/m³. These minute particles, frequently originating from smoke, vehicle exhaust, or industrial activities, have the ability to infiltrate deep within the lungs, potentially worsening health issues for sensitive groups.
Health officials advise that at-risk individuals should minimize prolonged outdoor activities, keep windows shut, and utilize air purifiers indoors. This alert is anticipated to remain in place until there is an improvement in air quality.
