Dubuque, Iowa – An air quality alert has been issued today, June 12th, due to elevated levels of PM2.5. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached 117, which is classified as “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.” Individuals who may be affected include those with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, the elderly, children, and others who are particularly sensitive to air quality issues. The wider public is not anticipated to face significant health risks.
The primary pollutant measured is PM2.5 (particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns), which is currently recorded at 37.5 µg/m³. These fine particles, often originating from sources such as smoke, vehicle emissions, and industrial activity, are small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs, potentially aggravating health problems among sensitive populations.
Health officials advise that individuals in sensitive groups should minimize prolonged outdoor activities, keep windows securely shut, and utilize air purifiers within their homes. This alert will remain active until there is an improvement in air quality.
