CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — On May 29, 2025, Daniel Alan Van Gorp, age 43, previously residing in Arizona, was found guilty by a jury in federal court in Cedar Rapids of one charge of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, specifically fentanyl and methamphetamine. The jury reached this verdict after a four-day trial and five hours of deliberation, which also determined that the fentanyl linked to Van Gorp’s conspiracy resulted in serious bodily injury to an individual in Iowa.
During the trial, evidence was presented indicating that Van Gorp sent multiple packages containing fentanyl pills, fentanyl powder, and “ice” methamphetamine from Arizona to Alexander Chapman located in Dubuque, Iowa. Chapman subsequently redistributed these controlled substances locally. On May 15, 2023, a victim utilized the fentanyl powder sent by Van Gorp, resulting in serious bodily harm.
Van Gorp is facing a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, with the possibility of a life sentence. He is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals as he awaits sentencing, which will be scheduled following the preparation of a presentence report by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicole L. Nagin and was investigated by the Dubuque Drug Task Force in collaboration with U.S. Postal Inspection and the Phoenix Police Department.
