“Iowa’s healthcare sector has been grappling with worker shortages over recent years. Utilizing the earn-and-learn model for registered apprenticeships in healthcare that has already produced 80 job-ready Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and has 394 active apprentices, we are tackling this challenge decisively,” stated Governor Reynolds. “The new Healthcare Credentialing Grant will facilitate career pathways for CNAs, Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Registered Nurses (RNs), and Certified Medical Assistants (CMAs), focusing our efforts where the workforce is most needed.”

The recipients of these grants include employers who aim to roll out programs that cover multiple high-demand career paths, focusing on assisting employees in acquiring Registered Nursing (RN) training and licensure while remaining employed, alongside initiatives to expand the number of healthcare technicians—roles that have become increasingly vital recently. In total, the funded projects are expected to train or upskill 399 participants statewide.

“Iowa Workforce Development (IWD) frequently meets individuals looking to enter high-demand careers but lacking the flexibility or resources to leave the workforce to complete traditional training programs,” mentioned Beth Townsend, Executive Director of IWD. “These new grant-supported programs offer a promising opportunity that not only promotes career advancement for countless Iowans but also addresses the urgent need for healthcare professionals in numerous Iowa communities.”

The grant funding will primarily support occupations such as Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, and Certified Medical Assistant, among others.
